What Changed in the Language

TrendForce now reports SEMCO-led OEM price increases landing in 4Q26 and frames it as the start of an MLCC industry upcycle.

Read that against what came before. Samsung Electro-Mechanics took 30% effective August 1, which most buyers processed as a correction after a long stretch of distributor markups and spot premiums. A single supplier-led step, painful but finite.

Calling an upcycle says something else. It says the August move was the opening of a sequence, that OEM-level pricing is following, and that the direction holds across quarters rather than resolving in one.

Why This One Compounds

The mechanism is the same pull driving everything else this month. AI infrastructure is consuming high-capacitance and high-temperature parts, and the same buyers taking 68% of cloud capex into memory are also filling those board positions.

What makes passives compound differently from memory is where they sit. A memory constraint hits a handful of line items you can name. Passives spread across hundreds of positions on a board, most of them low-value enough that nobody tracks them individually until the whole BOM reprices at once.

That's the trap in a passive upcycle. The parts are cheap, the exposure is wide, and by the time it's visible in your cost model it's already in every open quote.

Get Ahead of 4Q26

Two things to have finished before the quarter turns.

Current OEM price notices in hand, from the manufacturers rather than through distribution, so you're planning against the actual schedule instead of the channel's interpretation of it.

Second-source qualification done on the families you'll need, because qualification started in Q4 lands after the pricing does.

What Buyers Should Do Now

  1. This week: Request current OEM price notices directly from your MLCC manufacturers. Distribution pricing lags the notice, and you want the schedule, not the echo.
  2. Before 4Q26 demand tightens: Validate second-source qualification on high-capacitance and high-temperature families. Qualification begun after the increase lands is qualification that doesn't help.
  3. Rebuild the model, not the line: Reprice passives across the full BOM rather than the few parts someone flagged. Wide, cheap exposure is what makes an upcycle expensive.
