The Dates, Same as Ever
SK hynix has broken ground on a more than $4 billion advanced packaging facility in Indiana, its first US HBM production base.
The milestones follow the pattern you've seen all year:
- Cleanroom opening: targeted October 2028
- Next-generation HBM mass production: targeted 2H 2029
Nothing here touches your next eight quarters. Announced capacity is not qualified supply, and this project cannot authorise a source substitution or release an unqualified package into production.
The Part That Is Live Now
SK hynix says more than 100 companies are under consideration as materials, components and equipment suppliers for the Indiana site.
That's a live commercial process happening this year for a plant that opens in 2028, and it's the part of this announcement with a near-term action attached. A US HBM packaging supply chain is being assembled from scratch right now. Qualification into that kind of pipeline runs on multi-year timelines, which means the window is open precisely because the fab isn't finished.
If you supply materials, components, equipment, logistics or test services anywhere near advanced packaging, the question isn't whether the Indiana capacity helps your 2027 buys. It doesn't. The question is whether you want to be on a qualified vendor list that gets written once and then governs a decade of purchasing.
Keep the Two Horizons Apart
The failure mode here is letting a 2029 headline soften a 2027 risk assessment. It shouldn't.
Treat announced capacity as a supplier-relationship opportunity and a medium-term diversification signal. Keep it entirely out of your near-term supply model, where the only things that count are qualified output and written commitments.
What Buyers Should Do Now
- If you sell into this space: Find out what SK hynix's Indiana supplier qualification process looks like and whether your capability is in scope. The list is being built now, not in 2028.
- If you buy memory: Change nothing in your 2027 plan because of this. Cleanroom in October 2028 and production in 2H 2029 means zero contribution to anything you're quoting today.
- Either way: Ask strategic suppliers for capacity reservations and documented recovery plans against currently qualified output, and keep future US projects out of that conversation.
