The Channel Number
Germany's DDR5 price index hit 486% of its July 2025 level in August, climbing from 445% in July. A typical kit now costs roughly 4.9 times what it did just over a year ago, measured off German retail pricing.
Forty-one index points in a single month is the part worth pausing on. This isn't a slow grind, and retail channels don't usually move that fast unless the supply behind them has genuinely stopped flexing.
Server DRAM tells the same story more calmly: contract prices are up 13-18% QoQ for 3Q26.
Why There's No Slack Left
Samsung and SK hynix both reported 100% utilization on their memory lines in 1H26. There is no idle capacity to bring on, no swing shift to add, nothing to reallocate.
They're spending against it. The two invested KRW 43.198 trillion in semiconductor facilities in the first half, up 35.1% year over year. That money buys capacity for 2028 and beyond. It buys nothing for your Q4 build.
NAND is running the same play. Combined revenue for the top five NAND brands rose 77% QoQ in 2Q26, and Micron's NAND revenue reached $11.85 billion, up 99.2% QoQ. Revenue nearly doubling in a quarter is a pricing-power number, not a volume one.
What Breaks First
Long quote validity. If you're still issuing memory quotes with 30-day windows, the channel is moving faster than your own paperwork and you're absorbing the difference.
The second thing that breaks is the substitution shortcut. When memory gets expensive and scarce, somebody proposes an equivalent part to hold a build date. A memory device that is electrically equivalent is not automatically qualified, and approving one under schedule pressure is how a price problem turns into a field problem.
What Buyers Should Do Now
- Before your next quote goes out: Shorten memory quote validity to match how fast the channel is actually moving. A 30-day window against a market repricing 41 index points a month is a loss you've already booked.
- This week: Reconfirm price, ship date, allocation status and NCNR language on every open memory PO. Assume nothing carried over from July.
- Standing rule: No memory or MLCC substitution without engineering qualification, lifecycle review and a controlled AVL update. Especially not to hold a date.
