The dates

SK hynix has broken ground on a more than $4 billion advanced packaging facility in Indiana, its first US HBM production base. The cleanroom is targeted to open in October 2028, and next-generation HBM mass production is targeted for 2H 2029. Neither date falls within your next eight quarters, and an announced facility gives you no qualified supply before then.

Supplier selection is happening now

SK hynix says more than 100 companies are under consideration as materials, components and equipment suppliers for the Indiana site.

That selection is taking place this year for a plant that opens in 2028, and it's the one part of the announcement with a near-term action attached. If your business could supply the site, the Indiana capacity won't help your 2027 buys, but getting onto its qualified vendor list is a decision to act on now.

Keep 2029 out of the 2027 plan

A 2029 production date shouldn't change a 2027 risk assessment. Treat the announcement as a supplier-relationship opportunity and a medium-term diversification signal, and keep it out of your near-term supply model, which should count only qualified output and written commitments.

What Buyers Should Do Now

  1. If you sell into this space: Find out how SK hynix's Indiana supplier qualification works and whether your capability is in scope, while the list is still being built.
  2. If you buy memory: Leave your 2027 plan unchanged, since the cleanroom is targeted for October 2028 and production for 2H 2029.
  3. Either way: Ask strategic suppliers for capacity reservations and documented recovery plans against currently qualified output, and keep future US projects out of that conversation.
